William Wattie

Director Geral at Astrea Farinhas E Oleos S.A.

Presenter Bio

William is managing director of Astrea Farinhas e Oleos S.A., a Brazilian poultry renderer processing over 300 tonnes per day of material from two large poultry processors in the state of Paraná.

A New Zealander by birth, William graduated from the University of Otago in Economics and Political Science in 1991 and began his career in the business intelligence industry in London followed by postings to Santiago, Chile, and then São Paulo, Brazil. In Brazil he completed a post graduate specialisation in knowledge management through the FGV in Sao Paulo.

William returned to New Zealand in 2001 to take up a role with the NZ government in a trade development capacity with Latin America. Then in 2002 William returned to São Paulo to work in the NZ Consulate as trade commissioner and subsequently Consul General. Much of William’s work in South America has been with the meat industry, specifically finding opportunities for leveraging off NZ technology and know-how in animal protein processing.

When it became clear that Brazil’s outdated rendering industry could capitalise from improved technologies and processes from New Zealand, William resolved to remain in Brazil after the completion of his tenure in the Consulate to become an entrepreneur in the rendering field.

Astrea was established by William in 2012 and sought to transform the relationship between meat processor and independent renderer by locating the rendering plant on site and utilising a simple toll processing model. A next-generation plant was built, far in advance of any other in the region with heavy investment in automation and environmental compliance.Astrea’s plant in the Brazilian state of Paraná has been in operation now for over four years and has delivered excellent results for all stakeholders. The operation has become a benchmark for best practice in rendering in Brazil.

William is an active member in the Brazilian College for Animal Nutrition (CBNZ) and the Brazilian Institute for Corporate Governance (IBGC). Beyond rendering, William is a partner in Juno Business Partners, a small private equity firm with holdings in diverse animal protein businesses in Brazil.
